Srebarna Biosphere Reserve

Srebarna Nature Reserve has been a protected area since the1940’s. In 1975 it came under the Ramsar convention. It was declared a World Birding Biosphere Reserve in 1977. UNESCO granted the status of World Heritage Site in 1985.Srebarna is also an I.B.A.

The leading expert on Srebarna, Kolyo Mihof, works with us on some ornithological and ecological projects and also assists with our guided walks around the Reserve.
Hundreds of species of Animals, Birds and Plants make Srebarna their home and thanks to the network of walking and cycling tracks you can access most areas to experience them. A series of lookout posts and observation towers are ideal places to watch the wildlife or take a break and have a picnic or BBQ.

This beautiful, picturesque place is perfect for photographers both professional and amateur. Our Facebook page features  hundreds of views of the Reserve and surrounding environs…

We boast the only breeding colonies of two important species in Bulgaria, The Dalmatian Pelican (Pelecanus crispus) and Glossy Ibis (Plegadis falcinellus). You can also see White Pelicans (Pelecanus onocrotalus) and many other birds.

Profits from Pelican Lake Guesthouse go towards supporting our work here and also the Dimcho Debelianov Orphanage in Silistra.
